My Favorite Things: Chiropractic Care

First, I did not forget about this post for Saturday.  I just feel like this past weekend was a big swirl!  But this was on my mind and I am thankful I am able to post today!  🙂

I understand that a number of people are hesitant of what is considered to be “alternative” healthcare.  Just to be clear, I still see my doctor about every 6 months for a check-up.  I have blood-work done every other year.  I realize some people don’t even do those things.  If you’re not sick, why see the doctor, right?  Well, I’m all about preventative medicine and being proactive when it comes to my health and well-being.  One of the things I have found to be of great benefit to my quality of life is chiropractic care.

My mother struggled with horrible allergies for most of her early adult life.  I can remember when I was a child and she would get hives.  Her eyes would swell shut.  A lot of times she would have to self-medicate and go to bed because she was so miserable.  My mother was the one in our family that sought out chiropractic care.  Shortly after she began receiving spinal adjustments the hives went away…and they haven’t come back.

When I was 17, I was in a bad car accident.  Within 24 hours of the accident I began to have severe neck pain.  Instead of taking me to the local ER my mother took me to her chiropractor.  He took x-rays and it was determined that I had whiplash.  The chiropractor adjusted my back AND neck that day.  Within 2 days I was pain-free.

I cannot say I have been loyal to chiropractic care.  There were many times that I thought I was fine and just didn’t need to bother with going in for adjustments.  As I have gotten older I truly understand the benefits of weekly chiropractic adjustments.  I haven’t had a cold in over a year.  If I have a headache or sinus pain usually an adjustment will help to relieve the pain (without over-the-counter pain medication).  I had a pinched nerve in my  lower back that caused me to have some numbness in my right thigh.  I have all of the feeling in that thigh now.  I’ve had problems with a toe and had my toe adjusted.  (Believe it!)  I also had chronic shoulder pain that was caused by stress and the desk at my former job.  I am pain-free in my shoulder.  I have more energy and am more healthy because of chiropractic care.

I’m including a link to the American Chiropractic Association so you can check out the history and current medical findings regarding chiropractic care.  Here it is:
